STEM is for men, not for you Fernanda!
Dear friends, you have read the title correctly. Upon graduating from high school a teacher asked one of the girls in our Coding Club: “So what’s next? What will you study in college?”, to this Fernanda proudly and without hesitation responded: “Informatica!” (Computer Information Systems), her male teacher quickly said: “That’s for men, not for you Fernanda!”.
Fernanda is a scholarship recipient in our Girls Coding Club at UPNicaragua, throughout the last year she has outstandingly proven that she has everything she needs to pursue Computer Information Systems or any other major she wishes for her future. Her curiosity, motivation, discipline and tenacity took Fernanda and 9 other girls from not knowing what a website was to building one of their own after our 120 hours introductory course. Fernanda and all her classmates know that STEM is “not for men”, it is for the curious, the tenacious, the ones who are willing to put in the hours!
This past December 21st we celebrated the end of Phase 1 of the Girls Coding Club. Proud parents, relatives and friends, teachers, NGOs and International Mission personnel witnessed the exciting event where 10 of our girls received their diploma of completion and presented their final projects with amazing confidence.
They say the hardest part is starting and we couldn’t agree more! Today we are strongly committed to move into Phase 2 where our students will be able to learn more complex coding concepts as well as exposure to robotics. We also hope to grow the number of girls who can join the Club, today more than ever, we need your support!
Our goal is to empower girls with education and community, encourage them and their friends to pursue majors outside of their original comfort zones, expose them to skills which allow them to use their voice, inspire them to reach for the stars and prepare them to be the protagonists of their own lives.
